In the first century AD, Boudica led an uprising in Britain against the occupying forces of the Roman Empire. Boudica was Queen of Icenti, a peaceful tribe that dwelled in what is now eastern England. But after Boudica’s husband died, a Roman official seized her lands, had her stripped and publically flogged and had her daughters brutally assaulted – actions that intensified widespread resentment of Roman rule.
But with Romans distracted on a crusade in Wales, Boudica led a major uprising of coalition tribes on a revenge mission against the occupying forces of the Roman Empire. The uprising prompted some in Rome to consider a full withdrawal from the island colony, but Roman forces eventually defeated Boudica’s rebels. According to some accounts, Boudica took her own life rather than risk capture. She is remembered as one of Britain’s nationalist heroes and remains an important cultural figure in the United Kingdom.
