THE SUFFRAGIST Women's Flowy Muscle
THE SUFFRAGIST Women's Flowy Muscle
The Suffragist was created in 1913 by Alice Paul and the Congressional Union for Woman Suffrage (later the National Woman’s Party) to spread women’s political news and garner public support for a suffrage amendment. In addition to the informative articles, the newspaper featured large political cartoons drawn by Nina Allender. Her work provided the visual impact of the paper’s message.
Allender (1873-1957) was an American artist, cartoonist and women's rights activist. From 1914 until her final cartoon appeared in 1927, Allender contributed over 150 cartoons to the women's suffrage campaign (primarily for The Suffragist). Allender's work altered public opinion, reflecting the new spirit of the suffrage movement and presenting the suffragists as political, powerful and capable.
