Harriet Tubman was an abolitionist, humanitarian, and suffragist who was born enslaved in Maryland in the early 19th century. Against all odds, she escaped slavery only to risk her life again and again helping other enslaved people find freedom.

Tubman was known as the "Moses of her people," and during her time as conductor of the Underground Railroad, she made 13 missions to rescue approximately 70 enslaved people. She would be quoted as saying, “I never ran my train off the tracks and I never lost a passenger.”

During the Civil War, Tubman was a nurse and one of the most effective spies for the Union Army. She skillfully infiltrated enemy territory and uncovered Confederate plans. And in 1863, Tubman became the first woman to lead a military assault that would result in destroying Confederate rations and liberating 750 enslaved people.

In recognition of her achievements (which was long overdue), she was chosen to be the first African American to appear on U.S. currency, with her image to be featured on the $20 bill.
